Is there a book or a simple program that would show me how to keep the books for a small ebay business?

Inventory costs, ebay fees, paypal fees, sales tax, shipping and handling, etc. I am clueless. I haven't started the business yet. Is there a book that shows sample books for an online store. Would it include keeping track of sales tax? I saw some simple software a while ago, but it did not include a section for sales tax. How would I keep tract of that? Also, is it possible to keep tract of the books using an Excel spreadsheet? If so, how? I don't expect a lot of sales in the beginning. Thanks!

  1. You've already got it sorted. Just use an Excel spreadsheet for a start to save cost. Until your business has grown there is no need for any specific accounting software.
  2. If you dont have much volume then you can use a simple Excel spreadsheet for start its easy to create and once you have all formulae in place the calculations will be done automatically by Excel. Later you can try and get some free software that suits your needs.
  3. look on ebay, they have multiple programs you can use, purchase, etc. to track all you do, stock, inventory, listings, creating listings, etc. ebay even has classes you can take to learn everything about them.
  4. First of all get a Shelly Cashman book on Excel .Then go to the library and get a book on learning about business (one that has a business course in it) for accounting. Then read and learn.
  5. I have my own small business and the way to go is with Quickbooks it has everything you will need and more!! Good Luck
