What is the typical markup for wholesalers?

I am looking into starting a wholesaler/distribution company for a Home accesories line of products (placemats, trivets, coasters). The products are made in China, they will be imported to the USA, I will stock them and distribute them threw independant sales reps to retailers. What are the typical markups for wholesalers (between the price they bought the product from the manufacturer and the price they sold it to the retailers) so they can make a profit.

  1. Each industry has different "standard" markups. However, you should calculate your costs and then add what you want to make for each item, and come up with what YOU NEED TO CHARGE. Just because one company has a certain markup does not mean you can make it on that same markup. Lots depends on their distribution channels and how and where they get their goods. There is a typical markup, your are correct, but there is no guarantee that you can survive using that rate, especially just starting out.
