How do I begin registering my eBay business with the state. government, etc?

I am about to formally start a business importing motorized objects from China. I will be selling them on Ebay and sending them throughout the US and I hope to also sell to Canada. I don't know what the steps are from here? Register as a business, with whom? What else do I need to do? Is there a good resource for this?
